🎮 Google Project Genie: Playable Worlds from Text
Google DeepMind's Project Genie takes a text description and generates a fully explorable 3D environment. Type "a medieval village at sunset" and you can walk through cobblestone streets, enter buildings, and look around — all generated in real time by the Genie 3 world model. Unlike video generators, Genie creates frames based on ongoing user interactions.
GoogleGenie generates the world as you move through it. Look left, and the scene extends. Walk forward, and new terrain appears. The system runs at 24fps at 720p resolution, generating consistent geometry and textures. Sessions last about 60 seconds before expiring — available to AI Ultra subscribers at $125/month in the US.
Google DeepMindWithin hours, users were generating playable knock-offs of GTA, Zelda, and Mario 64 from text prompts. The fidelity is rough — The Verge noted results can't match an N64 game from 30 years ago, and input lag makes them "basically unplayable." Google quietly blocked Nintendo characters after backlash, though Disney was already restricted from the start.
NMEUnity's stock plunged 24% — its worst single-day drop since 2022. Take-Two fell 7.9%, Roblox 13%, and AppLovin 17%. CEO Matthew Bromberg pushed back on X, arguing outputs remain "probabilistic" and can't replace engines requiring precise mechanics and repeatable experiences. The 30-day return hit -34%.
